When you start talking about handheld stabilizers capable of supporting the weight of high-end cinema cameras and specialty lenses, it isn’t unusual to see one operator physically holding the gimbal and a second operator controlling difficult moves and managing camera controls, when applicable. ![]() The DJI Ronin 2 seems to offer almost every feature of the Freefly Movi Pro, along with upgrades exclusive to the Ronin 2 and a more impressive payload capacity, but let’s look at what really matters in the field before you commit to your next gimbal rental or purchase: Freefly Mimic vs. With the success of a shoot relying on the right gear being used, it’s important to see past the fanfare of what looks good on paper. It would be easy for me to restate each manufacturer’s respective press package but marketing iterations don’t prepare you for what you can expect to work with on set. The expanded camera cage with axis balancing improvements and thirty-pound payload accommodates a wide range of large, high-end cameras and lenses, meaning fewer compromises when it comes to selecting the appropriate camera package. Built-in SDIs provide a cable management solution that won’t clutter your rig, and a smart outer ring design that is comprised of two sections, allowing for a completely constructed tuning stand during setup and a lighter handheld stabilizer when the base is removed, DJI has proven that they know their audience. The Ronin 2 battery system is able to power the gimbal and camera up to 2.5 hours. This beast of a gimbal features dual hot-swappable batteries with industry-topping performance, onboard monitoring with a menu interface supporting tuning and advanced adjustment settings, incorporated d-taps for the camera and accessory power, a redesigned remote, and camera integration. The DJI Ronin 2 is one of the most capable, conscientious handheld stabilizers on the market right now. Constructed of lightweight materials, the Movi Pro supports a fifteen-pound payload while contributing less than six pounds to the overall rig. This re-engineered Movi uses Freefly’s popular Toad in the Hole quick release system to attach it to the Movi Ring Pro, an outer ring of 30mm tubing that functions as both a grip system for handheld operation and a gimbal stand for tuning or operator relief. The optional Mimic and Bush Pilot accessories create a dual operator ecosystem that supports gimbal, camera (limited), and lens control from a compact, wireless hub. ![]() Freefly deviated from the early Movi models’ clumsy, convoluted battery design that lacked built-in safety circuitry and incorporated dual hot-swappable batteries that are easily removed with one hand and discharge in the same amount of time it takes them to charge (approximately one hour).Įquipped with an onboard monitor, the Freefly Movi Pro provides basic tuning and adjustment setting controls from the rear of the gimbal and amalgamated d-taps offer accessory and camera power solutions from dedicated d-taps. The Movi Pro Handheld Bundle is the epitome of everything I’ve ever loved about the Movi line, optimized for professional use. Each stabilizer offers its own flavor of professional, proficient machinery, so what can an operator expect from these competitors of a niche arena? Freefly Movi Pro Last year’s release of the Freefly Movi Pro raised the stakes for videographers’ gimbal expectations, and DJI has answered the call with their powerhouse behemoth, the DJI Ronin 2. Across the globe, DJI didn’t waste much time developing the original Ronin – DJI’s less expensive alternative to the popular Freefly handheld stabilizer. The Movi M10 revolutionized filmmaking for a vast population of shooters (myself included) when it was released in 2013. ![]() When it comes to innovative gimbal designs, Freefly Systems and DJI are at the top of their class.

![]() ![]() Even though the shoe is lighter, they still were very nicely cushioned after a long squash session on court. I didn’t notice any strain on my knees or anything unusual like that. Number three, the cushioning was very nice. I’m going to compare that to the Gel Rocket: it has what feels like more cushioning but you feel a little less stable, a little higher off the ground - maybe something that would be great in volleyball let’s say but in a sport like squash where you’re trying to stay low to the ground and move side to side more, this shoe provides a lot more feel on the court. When you wear this you feel low to the ground. That compares - that’s about 30 grams lighter than ASICS’s standard- bearer - this is one of the most popular shoes in the world, the ASICS Gel Rocket, which is less expensive. 346 grams was the weight of one of these shoes. ![]() I’ve been testing it out for about a month now and I’m going to give you my feedback on the shoe and explain why I think so many pros are wearing it. This shoe is used by many of the top squash players in the world. ![]() For the player that is looking for a high performance, light indoor court shoe but doesn’t want to completely sacrifice cushioning the Asics GEL-Fastball 2 are an excellent choice.A quick review of the ASICS Gel Fastball 3. They are not as light or as low profile as the Blade they are relatively light, offer improved lateral support and improved comfort due to the addition of the forefoot GEL. While they do not provide the same cushioning and durability of the Blast they are better than the Blade in both departments. The Fastball 2 are an excellent mid-way point between the Blast and the Blade. I find that lateral support is better in the Fastball as the sole of the shoe is wider through the forefoot area proving a more stable platform. The Fastball 2 have GEL in the forefoot and rearfoot. There is no GEL in the forefoot area of the Blade. The Blade are designed for lightning quick movement around the court. In comparison to the Blade, The Fastball’s are heavier than the Blade. The trade off to the extra cushioning is the weight of the shoe and the extra height of the shoe. While both the Blast and the Fastball 2 feature GEL in both the forefoot and heel area the Blast has more of it. The Fastball are lower to the court so I do think lateral support is a little better in the Fastball 2 but it is good in both overall. Both grip the court really well and lateral support is good in both. In comparison to the new model of the Blast, the Blast 7 the Fastball’s are definitely lighter. There are some real differences between the Fastball and the Blast and the Blade. They do feature Asics’s GEL cushioning system in both the forefoot and heel. Lateral support is excellent and they are light so they will help you get around the court quickly. The Fastball 2 are a high performance shoe. I find Mike’s analysis to be pretty spot on. The Fastball 2 is an obvious choice for anyone who has previously enjoyed Asics footwear, and a new option for those seeking more durability out of a high performance shoe.” The break-in phase was minimal and there were no problems with slippery soles. Despite this reinforced support, the shoe is still incredibly light and barely noticeable when moving around court, which is always a good sign. The mold also easily accommodated my slightly wide foot, which has sometimes been a problem as well. There is more support in the metatarsal area, which had been a bit thin in the past and could lead to some foot pain. Having recently worn the Blade and Fastball 1's, there was no major shock transitioning to the Fastball 2. “The Fastball 2 is the latest incarnation of the Asics model that bridges the gap between the ultra-light Blade and bulkier new Blast models. Here is Mike’s report on the Asics GEL Fastball 2: Mike has played in Asics Blast 4, Blast 5, Blast 6, Blade 4 and the original Fastball so he is able to compare them to many of Asics most commonly used models for squash. Mike McCue, one of our sponsored athletes recently switched from the original Fastball to the new Fastball 2 and he was kind enough to provide feedback on them. They are light, comfortable, low to the court and offer excellent lateral stability. The Fastball 2 pick up right where the original Fastball left off. They are indeed quite light and keep the player very close to the court. They were an excellent alternative to the Blast 6 for those that were looking for a lighter, lower profile shoe. The original Fastball were a well-received shoe for us. The team is using Unity’s game engine as well as its own proprietary backend technology. And that number will be increasing this year. The game has had play sessions since last fall, with perhaps 1,000 people playing at a time. “We’re interested in making a great game that people play because it’s fund, and we’ll use whatever means we have we have to make a fun game,” Cloutier said. Some of this sounds like a blockchain game to me, but Cloutier said the company hasn’t made any announcements on that front yet. ![]() Still, someone ” just making a little farm shouldn’t in a very peaceful area should not have to worry about having all of their stuff destroyed,” Cloutier said. There is enough wildness in the game to make it feel dangerious, but it’s less likely for something to come in and ruin everything. Once in a while, you may still get barbarians that can come in and slaughter everybody on the farms every now and then. You can fish for a living in Clockwork Labs. But it has long-term progression and it should have political systems like Eve Online, where there are struggles between civilizations. It’s similar to the elements of free trade in games like Runescape, or changing the world like you can in Minecraft. Focusing more on that means you have to build a dynamic world where players themselves are creating things.” ![]() “Building and creating things like farming, fishery, trading, like free trade, and that kind of stuff, which often gets cut, is we wanted to make into the forefront. It’s less about heroic roles like fighting monsters and more like roles where you are building or farming. But this community sandbox is more like a dynamic world, where players create new things like a road connecting two cities or a sea trade route. Other worlds are more combat-focused and static, Cloutier said. I had a chance to go a bit deeper with Cloutier this time around. The headquarters is nominally in San Francisco, but Cloutier said the studio is operating fully remote, with employees all over the world. The company previously raised $4.3 million in August 2021. The company, which is founded by engineers with strong computer science backgrounds, is actively recruiting compiler, database, and distributed systems engineers as it seeks to make the foundational technology for BitCraft available to other developers as a standalone product. “Besides the obvious benefits of having additional funding, we are especially happy that so many accomplished industry innovators share our confidence in the BitCraft project.” Alessandro Asoni is cofounder of Clockwork Labs.Ĭlockwork Labs wants to attract engineering and game programming talent, while also expanding the team in other areas. “The additional capital raised will enable us to scale the team considerably and we are now even better equipped to face all challenges attached to creating a game world as ambitious as BitCraft’s,” Alessandro Asoni, cofounder of Clockwork Labs said, in a statement. The company’s first game project, BitCraft, has received broad positive reception since it was announced in September of last year, the company said. You can be a mason if you want in BitCraft. So they are, in their own way, the level designers,” Cloutier said. Whereas what we’re doing is we’re letting the players change and create the world themselves. “If you’re having to hand create a static world, it takes a lot of artists and a lot of actual level design to go do that. Overall, the game is more human directed when it comes to design. And that’s our angle on player content and procedurally generated.” So this is stuff that doesn’t require a huge team to create, but does require some pretty advanced technology. “We are really focusing more on players creating content, and also procedurally generated content. “We set out to make the game and it was definitely part of our calculus that we didn’t really have the ability to go and make a game in the style of traditional MMOs,” said Tyler Cloutier, cofounder of Clockwork Labs, in an interview with GamesBeat. Here's a game that's found its way into my thoughts like few others have before - I'm just grateful there's now a chance to carry it around with me wherever I go.I wish I could play Disco Elysium for the first time again. Who reads a novel hunched over a desktop anyway? Over the past week or so I've delved in and out of Disco Elysium's world by the comfort of a bedside lamp, on the back seat of a bus or over a coffee in the morning, and it's lingered with me well beyond. Which is to say this is a game best lived alongside, dipping in and out of its rich depths at your leisure. The text has been beefed up slightly so it's more suited to portable play - in my own experience it works a treat. It's the sort of world you'd typically lose yourself to via a tatty-eared paperback borrowed from a friend who's been banging on about its virtues for years now, all digested on a slow-moving cross-country train journey. ![]() ![]() Indeed, the Disco Elysium experience is as close as video games have got to the novel, a world where the shambling inner lives of its citizens are painted just as richly as the shabby, crumbling streets, and where thoughts chase across the screen with the regularity of tracer fire in an FPS. This is a dense, text heavy game (with text helpfully bumped up a point size or two until it's perfectly legible on handheld, though I admit I have been cheating and playing on the increased real estate of the Switch OLED's screen). Most pertinently, it's how the rest of Disco Elysium fits so neatly into the concept of the Switch - that play anywhere ethos that's easy to take for granted unless you're forced into one single spot to play a game. There's an occasional fiddliness to the controls that was there in previous console versions too, though they're rarely a hindrance, and likewise on Switch the loading screens can linger a little too long (something that was vastly improved by the day one patch, though, and that has since never presented too much of an issue). Disco Elysium is portrayed in a painterly style, courtesy of art director Alexander Rostov, that scales perfectly for portable play without losing any fidelity. It's a pleasure to say that the Switch port of ZA/UM's dense noir mystery hasn't just been worth the wait - it feels as if playing Disco Elysium in handheld on the go might well be the perfect way to experience this boozy, hilarious and deeply melancholic distant cousin to the likes of Planescape Torment.įirst, there's the technical side - or rather, the point that the technical details really don't matter so much at all here. In Disco Elysium's case, though, it's been some two years - two years, in my case, spent dodging what I'm frequently told is one of the most fascinating RPGs in recent years - one that's got its frustrations, sure, but also one that's full of splendiferously dark delights. I am, I'm not proud to say, one of those who's muttered those words to myself more than once, and more often than not the wait's never too long. You'll have heard the refrain, often down in the comments section of a recently announced indie darling, 'I'll wait for the Switch port'. |
